Originally an ancient Karatsu bowl-shaped tea bowl, this piece was severely damaged and had been preserved solely as a research reference for ceramic artists. Through restoration and kintsugi, it has been revived as a tea bowl once more.
The missing sections were filled with resin and finished in black, over which gold makie was applied to recreate the painted Karatsu patterns that once adorned the vessel. By imagining the breath of the original painting and reviving it, the bowl has regained the size, tactile feel, and texture that could never be experienced as a fragment.
This bowl is one we take pride in having faithfully recreated with the eye and experience of a ceramic artist. The rustic texture unique to old Karatsu resonates with the splendor of the gold maki-e, giving it a presence that seems to reconnect lost time.
