【Work Overview】 This is a one-of-a-kind mukouzuke (serving dish) revived using modern sensibilities and techniques from an ancient Karatsu ceramic fragment preserved through time.
【Background and Technique】 The foundation of this work is a fragment from an ancient Karatsu painted Karatsu four-directional dish. Although approximately 40% of its original shape was missing, the lost sections were carefully joined using resin, faithfully restoring the original form and thickness.
The restored section was deliberately given a jet-black base, over which maki-e (gold and silver powder decoration) was applied. The contrast between the warm, earthy texture and simple iron-painted bird motif (bird pattern) characteristic of ancient Karatsu ware and the dazzling, delicate maki-e lends the vessel new depth and narrative.
【Highlights】 Rather than concealing the “loss,” it elevates it into a new form of “beauty.” Enjoy this bold yet delicate design, a contemporary interpretation of the traditional spirit of kintsugi. Using it allows you to deeply appreciate its comfortable feel in the hand and its harmony with the food served within.
