Old Karatsu-style painted Karatsu tsubo-shaped tea bowl

Dimensions: Length approx. 17.0cm × Width approx. 11.5cm Height approx. 7.5cm
Weight: Approx. 352g
Restoration: Kintsugi (gold-joined repair), Reconstruction, Gold Makie
This piece was reconstructed using only a fragment of an ancient Karatsu tsubo-shaped tea bowl, roughly 10% of the rim. By filling the missing sections and applying kintsugi and gold makie over a black base, the bowl’s original presence has been revived for the modern era.
Originally collected by a ceramic artist for study, the fragment was restored to become usable once more as a tea bowl. Through this process, the bowl’s size, tactile feel, and texture—unappreciable as a mere fragment—have been brought to life.
Drawing on experience cultivated as a ceramic artist, the restorer takes pride in faithfully reflecting the bowl’s original form. The brilliance of the kintsugi and the rustic charm of the ancient Karatsu ware intertwine, creating a new landscape that transcends time.
