Restoration: Reconstructive restoration using kintsugi and gold/silver maki-e
The interior features a floral design, likely camellia or peony. Restoration was attempted to preserve the faintly remaining design elements. Traces of a continuous pine pattern were visible around the body. For the missing section, a base was created using a black and red gradient, over which gold and silver maki-e lacquer was applied to recreate the pine chain motif.
Though the rim was almost entirely lost, we imagined its former appearance based on the faint clues preserved in the ceramic fragments. By reviving it, we reflect the unique charm of early Imari tea bowls in the present day.
The celadon-toned glaze is crisscrossed with crackle glaze, and the soft texture, fired at a slightly lower temperature, exudes the simple yet profoundly mysterious charm unique to early Imari. Restored with its losses filled and adorned with the brilliance of gold and silver, this tea bowl transcends being a mere vessel. It is a bowl that reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of its era and the story of its rebirth.
