Early Imari Blue-and-White “Fukuju” Character Crest Bowl-Shaped Tea Bowl

Dimensions: Longest diameter approx. 11.6cm × Shortest diameter approx. 11.6cm Height approx. 7.5cmWeight: Approx. 290g
Restoration: Jointed repair (Kintsugi) Silver maki-e
An early Imari bowl-shaped tea bowl featuring the “Fukuju” (Fortune and Longevity) character crest painted in blue-and-white.
Once shattered with a large crack extending into the foot rim, it was preserved as a fragment. It was revived by meticulously joining fragments of the same period, shape, and design. Resin was used to fill the missing sections, coated to resemble black lacquer. Gold and silver maki-e were then applied to add texture. The characters for “Fuku-ju” (Fortune and Longevity) were further inscribed in silver to complete the decoration.
Through the masterful art of kintsugi, the fragments that had lain dormant have regained their form as a vessel.
When used in a tea ceremony, the very traces of its restoration become a form of beauty. Combined with the Fukuju design, it promises to enrich the fleeting moments of tea time.
