From Fragment to Masterpiece. The New Form of “Old Karatsu” Revived Beyond Time
Once lost, with forty percent of its entirety gone, this Old Karatsu piece lay dormant as a ceramic fragment. As if to fill the missing time, jet-black resin and gold-silver maki-e lacquer work were applied.
This is not merely “repair.” The rustic “pine” motif of the painted Karatsu ware, fired at the Yakiyama ancient kiln in Matsuura Karatsu, and the dazzling “gold and silver floral patterns” painted on the restored sections. Stillness and movement, old and new, clay and resin. Contrasting elements resonate within a single vessel, creating a dramatic landscape.
It is not “the end because it was broken,” but rather “precisely because it was broken, this new beauty was born.” This single piece embodies both reverence for the craftsmanship that revives the lost parts, restoring it to use as a serving dish, and a heart that cherishes objects.
